Abayomi Barber a master of Imagination and Form, stands as one of Nigeria’s most visionary artists—an innovator whose practice bridged traditional African aesthetics, surrealism, and classical realism. Born in Ile-Ife, Barber’s artistic journey spanned painting, sculpture, and teaching, each medium reflecting his fascination with the mystery of existence and the power of the human imagination. Trained at the Central School of Art and Design in London, Barber developed a style rooted in meticulous realism yet deeply infused with the fantastical. His figures often appear suspended between worlds—part human, part spirit—embodying his lifelong exploration of metaphysics, dreams, and the unseen. This distinctive synthesis became known as the Barber School, a movement emphasizing discipline, imagination, and technical mastery, which shaped generations of Nigerian artists. Beyond his artistic output, Barber’s legacy endures in his role as a mentor at the University of Lagos, where he founded the Abayomi Barber Art School. Through his students, teachings, and enduring works, he transformed Nigerian modern art, affirming creativity as both a personal revelation and a bridge between tradition and transcendence. Notable Works by Abayomi Barber include The King’s Oracle, The Golden Fish, Head of a Girl, The Mask Seller, Eyo Masquerade, Portrait of a Lady, The Thinker etc.
